One his way to Alder Creek, Wyoming with the information that will save his sister-in-law's life, U.S. Marshal Kendrick Parker stumbles upon one of the west's most notorious bank robbers, Black Bette during a stop in St. Louis. So certain has the deadly killer in custody, Kendrick makes arrangements to travel with a wagon train west so he can bring her to justice.
With little left but her good name, Amanda Davis has ventured to St. Louis in the hopes of procuring a teaching job. Before she can contact the school's head master she is taken into custody by Marshal Parker. Despite her vehement protestations of innocence, Kendrick brings her west with him.
But something about the woman who calls herself Mandy Davis wears on the dashing Marshal. When a fever almost takes his life, Kendrick begins to question whether he has the right woman.

Babs' Review:

To be honest, I have never read a Western Romance and was pleasantly surprised how well it turned out.  Kendrick Parker is a US Marshall and a nice looking man to boot.  He is heading out west to help his brother Bret clear his wife's name.  Before he can leave St. Louis, he is in a shop and arrests a woman whom he sees matches a wanted poster for a Black Bette.
This woman tried to tell him and the sheriff in town that her name is Amanda Davis and she was there to get a teaching position she applied for.  No one would listen to her, as they thought she was just trying to throw them off.  He wires on to San Francisco to tell them he has Bette and will bring her to CA.

Before he can get a response back from CA, Parker takes Bette with him on a wagon train heading west and this is where the fun begins.  Does Parker really have Black Bette or did he arrest the wrong woman?  He looked through her trunks and did not find anything that would make him believe she was a murderer and thief.  He only found books for children and clothes.  The woman tried with all her might to explain who she was, but he would never listen.  Will she make it to CA to stand trial and be hanged or is she really Amanda Davis?

I really enjoyed the humor and romance in this story.  At the beginning, I felt sorry for Bette/Davis then, towards the end, I was feeling sorry for both.   There are some laugh-out-loud scenes and stupid things Parker does.  The funniest is when they portray a couple.

The characters are well written.  You really want to know more about them.  The story line is fantastic where you do not want to put this book down till the end.  I stayed up two nights in a row till 1 am because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next.

  1. Babs, thank you so much for such a wonderful review. Fans of western romance sometimes can seem like they are in their own little world, but it is my favorite genre. I'm so glad you enjoyed Mistaken Bride and like the humor between Mandy and Kendrick.
