The Future of The One Hundred Romances Project

About a year ago, my debut novel, Drew in Blue, hit the virtual shelves. While hunting for places to review my work, I noticed a few things: eBooks weren't yet universally embraced. I had to click away from a lot of blogs that still only accepted physical copies of books. And more importantly, indie romances weren't exactly given the red carpet treatment.

Then, I had this nutso idea: I should start my own review blog! Romance authors publishing digitally through small presses and publishing independently needed a sanctuary. A place they were welcomed with open arms.

To be frank, I never thought I'd have the follow-through, though I loved the notion.I'm glad I was wrong about that.

Eventually, wonders of wonders, it all started to fall into place. I found a lovely crop of reviewers, and am still surrounded by the ladies who feel the same way I do. Laura, Babs, Brandi, Deniz, and Annie are voracious readers and I adore seeing their enthusiasm for this project! They make this crazy little blog a success.

But, as the year began drawing to a close, I started wondering about what happens next. I mean, the point was to find the best reads of 2011. I hadn't anticipated the idea of what came after December 31, 2011. After conferring with the girls, the decision was simple: We're going to press on with a new challenge to find the best new reads of 2012!

Naturally, that means we have to do a little work. First off, we're adding a new reviewer to the fold. Stacy, welcome aboard! Keep an eye out for Stacy's intro on the Meet the Reviewers page in the near future.

Secondly, we have to wrap up 2011. With that in mind, we will be closing to review requests this Saturday, December 10, 2011. After that point, we will do our best to get the email folders emptied out, and address all 2011 reads once and for all.

I anticipate this will take us into January of 2012, in which we will present our final list of The Top 100 Reads of 2011. And once that takes place, we will be open once again to submissions for any works published in 2012. An announcement will be posted when we re-open to reviews.

We thank you all for making this blog a success. Authors, thank you for providing us with terrific romances to curl up with, and for the opportunity to shine the spotlight on the fruits of your labors. Readers, thanks for coming on this ride with us, and especially for supporting the works of these fantastic writers. We certainly hope you'll join us in the New Year!

Any questions? Feel free to comment or contact us for clarification!

That Darn Real World!

Just a note from Joey to bow my head in shame and apologize for the silence. I've had a busy couple of weeks and have been playing catch-up. In addition to being a reading addict, I'm also a writer of the romances we're here to review. And I've been conferencing, trying to fine-tune a submission after an actual agent request at said conference, and then taking the NaNoWriMo plunge....*gasp* Well, let's just say I got my priorities tangled.

Never fear. Books are being read, reviews are to be posted, and I may actually get my email caught up! I'm executing a writing/promotion life revamp so I don't let the real world bite me in the behind again. Thanks for your patience, my lovelies! I appreciate it! Now, on to posting a review....

If anyone out there has a little blogging experience and would be interested in joining the review team, drop me a line or comment! Just keep in mind that we focus on ebooks, so you would need an eReader or an app to allow you to read submissions.

Q&A with Toni Rakestraw from Unbridled Editor

Aside from being a voracious reader, I'm also an author. The reason I started The One Hundred Romances Project was because (aside from thinking, "Yay! Lots of reads! Lots of reason for me to rave in blog posts!), in this new and crazy world of digital publishing, it seemed like a lot of great stories don't always get the attention they deserve. What we as small-press and indie digital authors need are people on our side-people willing to help, people willing to cheer us on, people willing to send up a big puffy smoke-signal when they find a fabulous read from an author in the trenches.

When I first started out with my debut novel, Drew in Blue, I was fortunate to meet Toni and John Rakestraw online. Toni strokes my OCD perfectionist ways, through her services at Unbridled Editor, as I prepare to shop my second full-length novel, and John was kind enough to grant me my first in-person interview on his awesome weekly showcase of authors (on BlogTalkRadio) called The Platform

This lovely couple strives to support the little guy and bends over backwards to help aspiring and up-and-coming authors. It's not just business for them. For that reason, I'm very pleased to introduce you to Toni Rakestraw, from Unbridled Editor. Get your pens and notepads out, as Toni offers some great words of advice for us authors!

Now Open For Review Requests!

It's September 1st, so The One Hundred Romances Project is now open for review requests once more. Please read our submission guidelines before sending off your request. I will be out of town for the holiday weekend, so my internet access will be limited. Please be patient as I sort through the new requests when not desperately seeking the sanctuary of the nearest beach!

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

Authors, Mark Your Calendars

The backlog has reached a respectable level - our last few requests are with reviewers to be read. In light of that, I've decided to re-open to submissions beginning September 1st. No early birds, please. Any review requests received prior to September 1st will not be addressed.

Don't forget to check out our Review Request Guidelines located here.

Call For Reviewer

I'm considering adding a reviewer to the lovely group I've been lucky to assemble so far. We love to read but hey, even us avid readers need to come up for air, sometimes.

Our needs are simple: Someone willing to give honest, but constructive (and well-worded) opinions. We're not here to rip authors' works to shreds. If something problematic must be addressed, we prefer to find a diplomatic way of discussing it.

Our focus is, of course, small-press and indie romances that are e-Published, so you will need to have an eReader, or the necessary apps for your iPhone, iPad, iPod or desktop. The majority of stories are submitted in PDF format, with the occasional Kindle or Nook format.

And naturally, a love of reading a wide variety of romance genres helps. We get quite the variety of romance sub-genres, from romantic suspense to paranormal and romantic fantasy.

Interested? Email Joey at onehundred romance (at) gmail (dot) com for more information!

Just a heads up to let everyone know we've updated our submission guidelines, in terms of publication date.

From this point on, in keeping with our goal to find the best reads of 2011, we will only consider submissions published on or after January 1, 2011.

Thanks, and looking forward to more great reads!

Regarding Interview Requests

I believe I have now sent communications/first round of questions to all interested parties. If you expressed interested in being a featured author and do not have an email with attached questions, let me know. Gmail can be rather, erm, interesting when it comes to juggling the levels of email we receive. (Translation: I can sometimes misplace email.)

Thanks!

Branching Out on the Project

We've been plugging away for a few weeks now on The One Hundred Romances Project, and I think I can safely speak for the entire review staff by saying that we're loving the variety and quality of small-press and indie romance ebooks we've been receiving! I've had my nose in yet another novel that I've had the pleasure of receiving through this blog, and am anxiously awaiting a free hour or two later tonight so I can return my attention to it.

To continue the theme of supporting the small-press and indie eRomance authors out there, and now that we've had some time to settle into the reading routine, I thought it would be a great idea to branch out a little and add another occasional feature to the blog. How about hearing from some of the authors directly, pick their brains a little?

I do love brain-picking. It's one of my favorite activities, second only to attacking a giant plate of bbq pork and mac n cheese.

Are you interested in being interviewed by The One Hundred Romances Project? We'd love to have you! We won't bite, promise. We prefer to nibble.

If you'd like to be one of our featured authors(or featured small-press eRomance publishers) and submit to a few questions, please comment below or use the review request email address listed in the sidebar, and include the following information:

Your name
eBook title (Released no earlier than October 2010 or soon-to-be-published eRomances)
Publisher
Romance sub-genre(s) of your story
Website, blog, or other online source of note that we can scour for fascinating tidbits to grill you about
Email address for us to contact you for further information.

We look forward to hearing from you!

New Feature!

Ladies and Gents,

May I draw your attention to the side-bar long enough to point out the newest feature on the blog? Scroll down a bit to find it.

Our goal, of course, is to find 100 great eRomances in 2011. While we expect to see lots of fabulous stories in the coming months, we'd love to spotlight our favorite reads. And so, to keep things a little easier for you, readers, we are keeping tabs of our 5-star books -- those stories that have earned our highest score.

We are only 13 days into January, and we can already proudly showcase two 5-star books. Please give them a read, as well as all the books featured on our blog.  Let's give those small-press and indie eRomance authors some well-deserved attention!

Thanks to everyone who has already joined the Project. Keep spreading the word!

Our Rating System

Our first official review will be posting shortly, just in time for the advent of a new year! Before posting, I wanted to be sure everyone was aware of the rating system posted in the side-bar. All books will be reviewed and assigned a rating from the following scale:

What The Heck Is This Blog About?

Starting in January of 2011, we hope to begin posting reviews of small-press romance novels and novellas. What do we mean by romance? Contemporary, historical, erotica, etc. Heterosexual and homosexual pairings alike are accepted. The key romance elements must be there:  A love story and a happily ever after of some sort. The usual restrictions apply: No bestiality, incest, pedophilia or rape scenario storylines. Nothing illegal or depraved. Other non-romance genre elements are welcome as long as the primary focus of the story is the romance.

Initially, we will be accepting only ebook submissions, though we will consider accepting bound print-copies in the future. Very recently or soon-to-be-published authors will be our primary interest. Submissions may be temporarily closed at any given time depending on number of reviewers and time-constraints. Keep an eye on the blog for the go-sign to submit, and please follow submission guidelines, if you send a manuscript when submission are closed, it will be deleted.

So what do we need from you right now? Spread the word! We need followers in order for this to work. Writers, readers, romance junkies in general, follow now and let your friends know where to find the One Hundred Romances Project! And get prepared to support the little (romance) guy or gal.
