Cover Art Bonanza!

Ashlynn Monroe shares her cover for her novel, Pray for Me.

Ashlynn says: I like this cover because the story has the traditional gothic vampire feeling.

Gabriel put his faith in his God and his king…That was centuries ago.  Harley is proud of her heritage and when she has the chance to give her hometown historical society a boost by booking an eccentric Swiss expert, she has no idea she booked someone who actually lived the history.  Immortality is a long time to have a broken heart.  Unable to stop himself, Gabriel draws the brilliant historian into his life.  Harley discovers far more than Gabriel ever expected about history, his history!  A quest to give Gabriel an answer to an old question will introduce them to the danger of a new enemy.  Is love enough when your love wants you body, soul and blood?

Pray for me is published by Wicked Ink Press and it's the 1st story in my Templar Vampire Series.  http://www.wickedinkpress.com/product_info.php?products_id=38&osCsid=9b526ba0b8b1ca97260aba70f12de5a6

Cover Art Bonanza!

Leah Marie Brown shares her cover for Silence in the Mist....

Leah says: Here is the cover art for my novel, Silence in the Mist, available July 7, 2011 in e and paperback form.

It was designed by Amanda Kelsey and I adore it.  Silence in the Mist is a historical novel with strong romantic elements, loosely based on a real-life counter-revolutionary spy.  After her family is murdered by an angry mob, Francoise Despres vows vengeance and dedicates her life to the counter-revolutionary cause.  Narrowly escaping the guillotine on several occassions, she evades capture and inspires her compatriots with her zeal.

I read about the real Francoise Despres years ago, after finding a dusty old book in a Paris bookshop.  I was enthralled by her tragic story and impressed by her bravery.  Her actions - so unorthodox, given her background and setting - seemed spectacular to me.  I knew I had to write a fictionalized version of her life and love.

I think Amanda captured the romance and danger of the era.  I appreciate that she focuses more on Francoise than on her romance, giving emphasis to her strength.

My novel is being published by Eternal Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Cover Art Bonanza!

I'll get the ball rolling by sharing my own cover art and why I like it.

I wrote a romance from the male perspective. Therefore, in my mind, frills were not an option. I wanted simple, bold, and something decidedly unfeminine. Obviously, considering the title, I couldn't have a yellow cover, right? When I filled out the questionnaire from my publisher regarding what kind of cover I wanted, I was adamant that I did not want a strapping young couple gracing the image, because Drew and Kris, the main characters, are simply not the type to lounge around and show off their abs and cleavage. They're normal people, not models. So what I asked for was a shot of a small town scene, since I consider River's View, the setting of Drew In Blue, to be a character in the story, too.

I rather enjoy the simplicity of the cover. I was surprised by the font combo used for the title, but I thought it fit well. Sooo, behold my boy romance cover!

(Drew In Blue is available for purchase from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, All Romance, and OmniLit)

Ebook Covers: A Love/Hate Story

I've been thinking today about book covers, after a surreptitious visit to Barnes & Noble to attempt to drop a few business cards in the romance section. (Success level: Fair. Too many bored employees asking me if I needed help. Business cards had to be snuck back into pocket.)

Print book covers make me a little jealous. There's a lot that is present in them that isn't present in ebook cover imagery. I mean, those of us who publish electronically get a jpeg image. There's no shot at cool things like texture, raised lettering. Maybe something glittery, if you're into that kind of thing. Personally, I'm a sucker for covers with a little texture. I don't know why, to be honest.

Ebook cover art can be a little suspect, at times. Artists may have their hearts in the right place, but still produce a cover that leaves you scratching your head in confusion over the final result. My biggest moment of confusion? Trying to figure out why anyone in their right mind would slap a golden retriever tail on a girl on the cover of a paranormal book I viewed online once.

So, I thought it would be a little fun to have a Cover Art Bonanza here on The Project. What do you think? Let's discuss some of those small-press and indie eRomance covers.

Authors, email us your ebook cover art, and tell us why you love it, and why it suits your story. Email an image and purchase links and include a paragraph about why you stamped your seal of approval on that cover, and we'll share it on a future post. Contact us at onehundredromances (at) gmail (dot) com and use a subject line of Cover Art Bonanza!

Until the covers start to come in, a little question to discuss in the comments below:

Readers, ever find a small-press or indie eRomance online that had cover art that stopped you in your tracks? What was it about the cover art that ultimately drew you to the story?

Also, what elements of ebook cover design might negatively affect your decision to purchase an ebook?  (Let's keep this portion to general commentary and not single out any particular book/author out by name or title. I know I'd cry if someone blasted my own ebook cover art on a blog.)

Thank Yous and Updates

Well, we have wrapped up our series of Featured Authors for now. When I first put out the call, I didn't anticipate such a great response. I just wanted to send out a tremendous thank you to all the authors who generously gave of their time to appear on The One Hundred Romances Project, for sharing their love of reading as well as writing, and for offering insights that are so invaluable to aspiring authors out there.

For authors who have submitted review requests: If we've accepted your book for review, I promise, we are working through the reads. If you're awaiting response to a request, you'll hear from us shortly. That pesky need for sleep, work attendance, and WIP writing can get in the way of our desire to sit around and read all day long.

And God, if you could give me either a few more hours in a day and/or unlimited internet access when I'm at work, that would be peachy. Thanks!
